Even though paper checks aren’t as common as electronic payments or direct deposits, it’s still important to know how to deposit a check correctly. No matter the method, understanding your options can help you get your money into your account.
You can deposit a check in three ways: in person at a bank branch, at an ATM or through your bank’s mobile app. Each method is usually free at your financial institution while check-cashing services may charge fees.
Here’s how to deposit a check using each option, plus helpful tips to make sure your deposit goes smoothly.
How to deposit a check at a bank branch
Step 1: Prepare your check for deposit
To deposit a check in person, start by endorsing it. Flip the check over and sign your name in the endorsement area on the back. Some banks require you to include your account number or “For deposit only” near your signature, so check the instructions on the back of the check or ask a teller if you’re unsure.
Next, some banks may require you to fill out a deposit slip. However, some banks, such as Citibank, may no longer require them.
Most banks keep deposit slips near the teller stations. You’ll typically write your name, account number, date and the amount of the check. Don’t forget to bring a valid ID and your debit card.
Step 2: Deposit the check with a teller
When you arrive at the bank, let the teller know you’d like to deposit a check. Hand over the check and the deposit slip. The teller will verify your information, process the deposit and provide a printed receipt showing the amount and account details.
Before leaving, double-check the receipt to confirm the amount and account number are correct.
How to deposit a check at an ATM
Step 1: Endorse your check
Just like when you deposit a check in person, sign the back in the endorsement area.
Step 2: Find an eligible ATM
Locate an ATM connected to your bank that accepts check deposits. Many ATMs at bank branches do, and some stand-alone machines may as well.
Insert your debit card and enter your PIN, then select “Deposit” and “Check deposit.” The screen will walk you through the process. When prompted, insert your check into the deposit slot. Some ATMs will scan and display the amount. Make sure to verify it before confirming.
Once complete, take your receipt for your records.
Tip: Some ATMs have limits on how many checks or how much money you can deposit at once. If you’re unsure, check your bank’s policies.
