Debit cards are a common feature of most checking accounts. They allow you to make withdrawals and deposits from ATMs, spend money from your account in person or online and access your account at your financial institution’s branch. Several measures make your debit card more secure for everyday use, but there are still some concerns to keep in mind when you use your debit card for purchases online.
Let’s explore some of the risks involved in using your debit card and how you can avoid them in the future.
Is it secure to use a debit card online?
While using a debit card online is generally secure, there are some security concerns to be aware of. If someone discovers your debit card information online, they may be able to use it without you knowing about it until later.
Luckily, vendors have implemented methods to protect the funds connected to your debit card. Some of these measures include:
- Payment data encryption: Payment data encryption obscures your sensitive financial data by scrambling plain text data like debit card numbers using encryption keys. This may help keep your information secure from potential fraud. Look for a URL starting with “https” or a padlock icon on your web browser, which generally indicate data is being encrypted. If you’re not sure, you may also ask a retailer directly if their online payment portal is secured with data encryption.
- Payment data tokenization: This process replaces sensitive card data with a unique, non-sensitive token that can be stored securely and used for future transactions without exposing the original data. Both tokenization and encryption help protect your data in different ways from potential hackers and fraudsters.
- Two-factor authentication: In this process, you may be required to enter an additional security PIN or password to complete online transactions using your debit card. The PIN may be sent to your cell phone or email account. You’ll then need to enter it before you can make the purchase. This can help verify that it’s really you making a transaction.
Keep in mind, however, that not every online vendor may use these protections. Debit card users should always ensure that an online vendor takes the proper steps to safeguard private information before entering their payment details. Take the time to validate merchants, URLs and direct deposits before making a payment.
Debit card protections to know

- $0 liability on unauthorized purchases: If you don’t authorize a transaction, Citi won’t hold you accountable for those expenses on your debit card1
- Fraud detection and alerts: Citi monitors accounts for potential fraud and unauthorized use and notifies you if they detect suspicious activity
- Identity theft protection: Citi provides access to identity theft resolution services if you think you might’ve fallen victim to an identity theft scam
