You’ll need your phone, computer or tablet and a credit or debit card to shop online. Get started by searching for the product you’d like to buy. If you have a specific brand or item in mind, you can go directly to the company's website. You can also start on a search engine if you’re browsing more generally.
Making a purchase online
While different websites can have different checkout processes, here’s how it usually works. Once you’ve found the item you’d like to buy, add it to your cart. When you’re finished shopping, check out by clicking on your cart. You’ll enter your shipping address and payment information, after which taxes and shipping costs will be calculated (if applicable). Many sites charge for shipping, but some offer lower-priced or free shipping for longer delivery times or purchases over a certain amount.
Staying safe while online shopping
There are a few ways you can help keep your information safe when you make online purchases. Shop at reputable retailers whose names and brands you recognize. If you’re not sure whether a website is reputable, do a little research. Search online to find information about the company and read reviews. Remember, if a price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
When checking out, make sure you’re on a secure site by looking for the padlock icon in your browser window. A secure connection can help keep your personal information safe when you make a purchase.
It’s always a good idea to use a card with $0 liability on unauthorized purchases – like a Citi credit card. On the off chance that your information is stolen, you won’t have to pay for any unauthorized charges.
Research and read reviews
Product pages typically include photos and text descriptions of items, but doing your own research may help better inform your decision. For example, tech blogs might compare specs across different laptops.
Reviews show other customers’ experience with a product or brand. Reading them can provide clues as to whether a product will meet your needs and help you make a more informed decision. For example, if multiple reviews state that a sweater runs small, you might decide to size up.
Start with brands you know
Shopping online with brands you already know can help you feel more confident as you begin to shop. This can also help you ease into the online shopping experience – brands with brick-and-mortar locations sometimes allow you to order online and pick up in-store. You may also be able to return or exchange items ordered online at a store.
