Know when to shop
The best time to shop depends on both the retailer and the item. Clothes often go on sale at the end of the season as the temperature changes. You’ll find deals on swimsuits at the end of summer and on mittens as winter thaws out.
Other items, such as electronics, toys and mattresses, go on sale around major holidays like Memorial Day or Labor Day. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, can be a good time of year to buy a TV, for example.

Shop strategically
The first step to shopping strategically is keeping a list of what you need for the next season. Focus on the essential items you know you’ll actually use or wear. That social media trend may look hot now, but it may not stand the test of time.
Don’t make purchases simply because something is discounted. While items like phones, laptops or cars might go on sale before a new edition is released, your current model may work for years to come. Save money by holding off on these purchases until you truly need them. This way, you can buy the one you really want.
Be smart with savings
There are many ways to shop smarter and maximize your savings during end-of-season sales.
Always compare prices in-store and online. Sometimes online retailers have exclusive deals, while other times a local store might be able to match or beat the price.
Many stores have loyalty programs and apps that provide savings and coupons. Check your email for promo codes, coupons and special deals that are only available for a limited time. Look for buy one, get one (BOGO) offers and final markdowns to get more for your money.
There are also various online tools and browser extensions that aim to get you deals. When shopping online, the Citi Shop℠ browser extension is a free tool for eligible Citi® credit cardmembers that automatically searches for discounts and coupons at over 5,000 online stores. Enrolled cardmembers who use the extension can also activate available offers and complete their purchase to receive statement credits.
Make sure you understand the return policies for clearance or on-sale items. Some retailers may have shorter return periods on these items or may not accept returns at all. Triple-check that the item is in good condition before you buy it.
Shop smart in any season
The end of the season is one of the most exciting times to shop. With these tips, you can save money and find that perfect item you’ve been looking for.
