Winter Car Rental Tips

If you’re headed out for a winter getaway this year, you may want to rent a car to enjoy the flexibility, comfort and convenience of exploring at your own pace. But before you throw your skis in the backseat and squeeze into your snowpants, keep in mind some of the special considerations that come with renting a car in winter, like road conditions or the availability of winter tires. Let’s look at some ways to keep your winter car rental a safe and smooth ride for everyone.

Check the weather

Before setting foot on the rental lot, take a look at the weather forecast and plan ahead for any contingencies. Use a weather app or check the news for any approaching snow, sleet or stormy conditions that might make driving more difficult, such as icy roads or low visibility. Keep in mind that challenging weather conditions can sneak up on you. Have a backup plan for what you’ll do if driving is no longer an option.

Pick the right car

When renting in winter, picking the right car is essential. Some cars are better equipped to navigate inclement weather than others. For example, a convertible might not be the best option, but an SUV with high ground clearance and all-terrain tires that can handle the winter weather is a great option.

Some rental agencies may offer snow tires, but it's not guaranteed. Make sure to read up on state and local regulations regarding tire treads or chains in snowy weather. You may be fined for driving without them, even if your rental agency doesn’t offer specific winter tires.

Ask the rental agent for help booking a car with four-wheel or all-wheel drive and anti-locking brakes. Avoid cars that are lower to the ground or have rear-wheel drive whenever possible, as they’re more likely to skid.

Prioritize safety

Safety is paramount when renting a car for a snowy trip. Before leaving the rental car agency, double-check that your car’s tire pressure is where it should be. You can usually find your car’s recommended pressure on the inside of the driver’s side door and in the car’s instruction manual, if available. Always make sure you’re driving with enough gas, that you and your passengers are wearing your seatbelts and that you’re staying with, or even under, the speed limit, especially when driving in snow or ice. Be sure to engage any additional safety features like lane assist and blind spot alerts whenever possible.

Understand your rental terms

Double-check that you understand the terms of your rental before driving off the lot. Come prepared with a current license and credit card, and make sure you’re clear on your rental agency’s policies and procedures. The agency may have rules regarding additional drivers, age requirements, late or after-hours returns and cost responsibility or liability for damages. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more you know up front, the fewer surprises you’ll have to deal with when you return your car.

Be prepared for winter surprises

Even if you’re prepared, snow can throw your carefully planned car rental off track. Bring along safety equipment in the car, such as an ice scraper to clear your windows and a portable phone charger that doesn’t require a car battery. A bottle of water and snacks are also a good idea to have on hand.

In the worst-case scenario where you find yourself completely stuck in the snow, a shovel can be handy to dig yourself out. Keep warm clothes and blankets in reach if you have to turn the heat off to save gas. Save your rental company’s roadside assistance number in your phone before you set out and contact them immediately if you run into any issues.

Remember to build extra time into your drive in case of inclement weather so you don’t have to speed or rush. Before you leave the lot, confirm your existing auto insurance will cover the rental car, or opt for collision insurance directly from the rental agency.
