Here's how the pickup process works once you're on the lot.
What to bring
First, you’ll go to the counter and speak to an agent who will ask for your documents and payment. You’ll typically need a valid driver’s license and form of payment. You can pay with a debit or credit card (paying with cash can be much more difficult and is often not permitted). Keep in mind that credit cards may offer extra benefits, such as rewards on car rentals and insurance.
Before going to the lot, review the terms of your rental and note any additional documents they require you to present when picking up the vehicle.
Insurance
When you pick up the car, the rental company may ask what insurance options you’d like. You may also be able to choose these when booking.
If you’re paying with a credit card, the card may offer rental car insurance. Or, you may be covered by your own auto insurance. Check the details of what’s covered by your credit card and your auto insurance, and decide which options you want.
Multiple drivers
If multiple people will be driving the car, each person must be present when picking up the vehicle. Both drivers must provide their licenses, and other documentation may be necessary.
Inspecting the car
Before driving off the lot, take a few minutes to inspect the car. Car rental companies will usually give you a report about the vehicle's condition – this is part of the process for many companies. The agent may also do a walkaround to inspect the car and note the location of any damage, such as scratches and dents.
Take pictures of the car from every angle to document its condition. Note any existing damage to the car and make sure it matches up with the rental company’s documentation. Check the fuel tank level to make sure it matches what was recorded in your rental contract. You’ll likely have to return the car with the same level of fuel as when you picked it up or pay additional charges.
Returning the car
Depending on your reservation, you may be returning the car to the same or a different location. Double-check your reservation to make sure you have the correct location and time. Rental companies may charge a fee for late returns. Many companies will let you know the window and operating hours for your return. If you’re going to arrive outside the window, let the rental company know and make sure someone will be there to accept the car.
It can be a good idea to take photos of the car again to record its condition.
Fill up the tank
Car rental companies often require you to return the car with either a full tank or the same gas level as when you picked it up. This information should be in the rental agreement, but if it is unclear, you can always contact the car rental company.
