Traveling by yourself can be an enjoyable and empowering experience. It can also be slightly stressful. As with any trip, there’s always a chance something won’t go to plan, and you’ll need to figure out what to do. Instead of worrying, try to think of flying solo as a fun challenge and part of your travel adventure. Be proud of yourself for getting out of your comfort zone.
Read on if you’re anxious about flying alone and want some advice. Here are some tips for navigating the ins and outs of airports, settling in on a flight and finding your way to your destination.
A step-by-step guide to getting on your flight
Step 1: Your first priority is to figure out how to get from your home to the airport on time. Aim to be at the airport 2-3 hours before your flight, depending on whether it’s international or domestic. Decide if you want to book a car service, call a taxi, take public transportation, use a ridesharing app or drive yourself (in which case you may want to reserve parking beforehand). Note the correct terminal for your departure.
Step 2: You may be able to check in online and get your boarding pass emailed or added to your electronic wallet. If not, you’ll check in and print your boarding pass at your airline’s self-service kiosk or stand in line to see an agent at the terminal. Check your bag, if needed. You’ll have to show a form of identification — your passport if traveling internationally or a driver’s license or state ID if traveling within the US.
Step 3: You’ll go through the TSA line where an agent will check your boarding pass and ID and screen your bags. Make sure to follow the 3-1-1 rule for toiletries and get rid of any excess liquids.
Step 4: Confirm your gate number on the monitors, walk to your gate and wait for boarding to start. Pick up some extra water and snacks if you need to. Listen for any announcements about your flight.
Step 5: Board the airplane and find your seat. Get as comfortable as you can and wait for takeoff.
