Car rentals can be a convenient way to get around, whether you’re on a trip with your family or friends, traveling for business or enjoying a relaxing vacation. But the costs can add up. Here are some tips to help you save the next time you rent a car.
Compare prices
Before you choose a car rental company and pickup location, it can help to compare prices. Some travel services, like Citi Travel® site, allow you to compare prices before you select a rental car, helping you assess the comparable cost of picking one car over another before your trip if you have an eligible Citi card.
Rent outside of the airport
Picking up your rental car directly at the airport can be a seamless way to travel, but it may also be more expensive. With rental car companies paying to have their businesses directly at the airport, the costs can be higher. Consider renting your car away from the airport, for example, at a nearby rental lot downtown.
Choose a less expensive car type
Selecting a less expensive type of car – like a compact or economy car over a luxury or SUV model – can be another useful way to save on your rental costs. Of course, consider your needs when making this decision, such as whether you are traveling with family or friends, need a car seat or are traveling with a lot of luggage or equipment. But if you can opt for a smaller car with fewer add-ons, you may be able to save on rental costs.
Be mindful of fees
Being attentive to fees and adhering to your rental agreement can be another way to avoid unnecessary costs when renting a car. Some rental companies may include fees like an early return fee (if you return the car earlier than expected and outlined in your rental agreement), a late return fee (if you return the car past when your agreement specifies it should be back), a lost key fee and cancellation fees if you don’t cancel within a set window. Add-ons, like GPS or additional drivers, can come with fees too.
Refuel before returning the car
Perhaps one of the simplest money-saving tips is to refuel the rental car before you return it. Some rental agencies may charge a refueling fee or charge you a (often higher) price for refilling the tank if you don’t top off the gas tank, don’t have a receipt showing you refueled the car within a certain distance of the return location or return the car at a lower fuel level than when you picked it up. Check your rental agreement to understand any stipulations about fuel.
