Costco is one of the country’s most popular membership warehouse clubs, offering everything from groceries and home goods to gas, electronics and more. Before you stock up, it’s helpful to know what credit cards Costco accepts. For in-person purchases, Costco accepts only Visa credit cards.
There are, however, several ways to pay. Here are the payment methods Costco accepts at the checkout counter, the gas pump and on Costco.com.
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi helps you maximize your rewards with several cash back categories:
- 5% cash back on Costco gas, and 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging up to a combined $7,000 spend each year
- 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases, including Costco Travel
- 2% on all Costco and Costco.com purchases
- 1% on all other purchases.1
These benefits make the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi a convenient way to pay at Costco, whether you’re filling up your tank, stopping by the warehouse or shopping on Costco.com.
Payment methods accepted at Costco checkout
The checkout counter at warehouse locations offers several ways to pay. Remember, the Visa restriction only applies to credit cards. You may still use most PIN-based debit cards from other providers. Accepted payment methods include:
- All Visa Cards, including the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
- Most PIN-based Debit/ATM Cards
- Costco Shop Cards
- Cash
- Personal checks from current Costco members
- Business checks from current Costco Business Members
- Traveler’s checks
- EBT cards
- Mobile Payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay)
- FSA/HSA Visa or MasterCard Debit cards are accepted at Pharmacies, Optical and Hearing Aid Departments
- Filtered Spend Visa/Mastercard
- InComm and Optum MedFlex cards
You may choose to swipe, insert your card or use contactless payment methods tied to your Visa credit card. Note that you may not be able to pay with some of these methods, like cash or check, if you use the self-checkout line.

Costco’s gas pumps are a popular place for members to fill up. Costco pumps accept:
- All Visa Cards, including the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
- Most PIN-based Debit/ATM Cards
