While you can’t use AAdvantage® miles to pay for a checked bag, you can use your miles to purchase a fare that includes a checked bag. Eligible AAdvantage® cardmembers may also be entitled to a free checked bag on certain domestic flights. Cardholders can also use their miles in several other ways that make travel more enjoyable.
Here’s what you need to know about using American Airlines miles to pay for checked baggage.
Ways to get checked baggage with your American Airlines flight
There are several ways to cover the cost of checking a bag, some of which use miles to get a flight that includes a checked bag.
- Choose a fare type that includes a checked bag: When you use miles to purchase a certain fare, it may include a checked bag. Basic Economy fares do not include free checked bags unless you’re an AAdvantage® status member or eligible AAdvantage® credit cardmember flying to certain destinations within the U.S. and Canada on an American Airlines flight.
- Travel domestic: AAdvantage® cardholders can get their first checked bag free on domestic American Airlines itineraries for themselves and up to 4 travel companions
- Have an AAdvantage® credit card: Citi® / AAdvantage® credit cards can help you earn miles while also providing you with at least one free checked bag on domestic itineraries operated by American Airlines
- Take advantage of status: Certain AAdvantage® and oneworld® status members may get up to 3 free checked bags on itineraries marked and operated by American Airlines. Status is determined by Loyalty Points, which accumulate as you earn eligible miles. Check your Loyalty Points balance and status in your AAdvantage® account to confirm eligibility for checked bags
