North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas — Charles Darwin University (CDU)* INPEX and its Ichthys LNG Joint Venture participants contributed AU$3 million toward the construction of the North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas at CDU as part of the AU$91 million package of voluntary offsets. The center provides training and education programs (both on campus and externally through distance learning) together with research initiatives targeted to support the development and operations of the oil and gas sector in the region. Through a tri-party agreement between INPEX, CDU and students that is overseen by Australian Apprenticeships NT, 10 traineeships have been completed. This follows the completion of on-the-job training at INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG as part of the traineeship program, offering 10 Territorians new career potential in the oil and gas industry. The trainees were selected from a field of more than 1,000 applicants from across the nation. Each student undertook a two- year traineeship that provided them with a Certificate III in Process Plant Operations qualification to enable them to operate as competent operations technicians in the LNG industry. INPEX recently announced AU$90,000 in scholarship funding to support six students at CDU in courses related to the oil and gas industry over the next three years.
