- Citi Foundation Grants US$10,000 to Akhuwat
In line with its objective to support the development of microfinance and microentrepreneurship in Pakistan, Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citi, has extended a grant of US$ 10,000 to the Lahore-based Akhuwat, a microfinance institution catering specifically to the credit needs of underprivileged men and women. The grant will used to promote Akhuwat’s micro lending products.

”All my life people have taunted me and called me ‘Jaddi’ – a worthless woman,” recalls Sahibzaadi, who lives in Bhitshah Matyaari district, Sind. Sahibzaadi is 24 years old and physically disabled. Living in extreme poverty with one goat to pass for sustenance, she felt, in her own words, “inferior and useless” – her disability standing in the way of a marriage and even normal friendships. That was two years ago. Today Sahibzaadi’s reality is starkly different: three microloans later she runs a successful tailoring business and used her savings to buy a milk cow which she uses to supplement her income. Sahibzaadi earns Rs. 7,000 a month – a far cry from the days when she and her aging father ate one meal a day – and she has plans to further diversify her business by training other women for a fee.

As the demand for affordable housing is on the rise, the issue is further compounded by the currently limited housing finance products available for low income segments that can facilitate home ownership. One of the overarching questions social entrepreneurs continue to face is how to adequately address the unmet demand for housing-related credit products.

Karachi – Citibank Pakistan organized a "Diversity Week" at its branches in Karachi, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Faisalabad as part of its ongoing commitment to fostering diversity within the bank. While diversity is a cornerstone of Citi's employment practices, this is the first time that 40 countries throughout Citi's EMEA (Europe Middle East & Africa) region, including Pakistan, jointly sought to generate awareness on the importance of diversity in the workplace.

Citi Announces US$25000 Financial Education Grant to Institute of Business Management Karachi.
Karachi – Citibank N.A. (Citi) and its philanthropic arm Citi Foundation announced an award of PKR 1.6 million (US$25000) for the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) Karachi by way of support for a joint risk management training initiative for 30 master’s level students of banking and finance. The grant was commemorated at a small ceremony attended by senior Citi management and members of IoBM’s executive committee and faculty.

Islamabad – ”It’s not easy to hear your children cry from hunger at night,” recalls Soomran Bhanbro, who lives in Khairpur district, Sind. Today Soomran’s reality is starkly different – four microloans and five years later she is the successful operator of a medical supply business and employs two contractual staff to aid her.

Karachi: In line with its objective to inculcate a spirit of volunteerism amongst its staff, Citigroup, in liaison with Fatimid Foundation organized a blood camp at its Head Office in Karachi. More than 65 volunteers donated generously towards this noble cause. The blood donated will be used to treat adults and children suffering from ‘Thalassaemia’ and ‘Haemophilia’, blood disorders that require frequent transfusions.

Islamabad – in line with its commitment to the promotion and development of microfinance as a viable tool in poverty alleviation, Citigroup has sponsored an 8-day ‘Training of Trainers’ workshop that aims to spread basic financial training amongst low-income households.
Called ‘The Financial Education for the Poor Project’ or FEP, the program is led by international NGO’s ‘Microfinance Opportunities’ and ‘Freedom from Hunger’ with exclusive funding by Citigroup.

Citigroup in collaboration with The Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, (IBA) organized a 12-day seminar titled “Introduction to Risk Management”.
Scheduled from 11th to 23rd December 2006 during the academic winter break, the program was held at the Centre of Executive Education, IBA with 30 students Karachi, Sukkur, Quetta, Multan and Peshawer. Nominations were invited from business schools across the country to ensure participant diversity and maximum reach.

The launch of this unique collaborative effort grew out of both organizations’ commitments to microfinance and poverty alleviation made at the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative.
